Resume Tips
A resume is a critical tool used by employers for evaluating candidates. It is also a means to help you express your interest and show your suitability for specific job opportunities. It should provide a clear snapshot of your education and experiences and give the reader a concise picture of what you have to offer. Follow these guidelines as you develop your resume.
  • Spend ample time creating and reviewing this document and seek advice of others (for example, career coaches) so that your resume portrays you in the best light possible.
  • Think of your resume as a marketing tool - quantify your accomplishments and use action verbs such as, achieved, created, developed, demonstrated, delivered, etc.
  • Chronological resumes (most recent experience is listed first) are most typically used.
  • Functional resumes (experience is listed according to relevant skills) are also used in certain situations, such as for those with diverse experiences, career gaps, older workers, etc.
  • Rather than creating a laundry list of your qualities, back them up with specific examples of experiences and accomplishments.
  • Think of what transferable skills you might have obtained in your work experiences and highlight those for the position you are applying.
  • If the title of your previous job downplays your role, use skill headings that best describe the roles you played. For example, if you were a telephone receptionist and wanted to highlight your roles, you could say "identified and served customer needs". In particular, use skill headings that are advertised in job descriptions to catch the eye of the hiring manager.
  • If you have worked with someone well-known in your field, mention him or her by name.
  • Do not include your age on your resume to avoid any possible age discrimination.
